Dr. Donald E Grant Jr., began his career as a middle school science teacher in Baltimore MD after graduating from Hampton University with a Bachelors' degree in Biology. He holds a doctorate in Clinical Psychology and serves in two Executive Director roles, one with his boutique training and consulting firm Mindful Training Solutions and the other at Pacific Oaks College's Center for Community and Social Impact (CCSI). While at Pacific Oaks, Dr. Grant has served as the MFT Clinical Training Director, Core Faculty and Dean of the School of Human Development. He has a long history of direct mental health service delivery and administrative oversight for foster care systems, child welfare programs, education systems and homeless mental wellness services. He is currently overseeing a Community Agents of Change contract for LA County Department of Mental Health to reduce stigma and increase knowledge on mental wellness in Black Communities of LA County. Dr. Grant is an international speaker and workshop facilitator, film and TV consultant and published author. His latest book "Black Men, Intergenerational Colonialism and Behavioral Health: A Noose Across Nations" is available now.
Dr. Monique Crandal, Ph.D. Working Toward Common Goals: Navigating CMIA, FERPA, HIPAA while Mitigating Risks of Campus Violence(2 CEs) Participants will be able to:
Identify two relevant intersections of FERPA and HIPAA as they relate to an ongoing threat assessment case in a higher education setting.
Demonstrate one to two ways in which timely communication can assist with goal-directed resolution for all parties involved.
Identify two ways in which communication tools can be used to mitigate fear management and reputational risk to their institution.
Demonstrate two lessons learned in communicating to relevant stakeholders within higher education by applying the updated CMIA/ FERPA/HIPAA guidance to their campus events.
Monique Crandal, Ph.D. is the Director of Student Affairs Case Management Services and co-chair of the Behavioral Threat Assessment and Management Team at the University of California, San Diego. In this role, she coordinates crisis support through strategic intervention, case management, and collaboration with campus departments, faculty and staff. She also strengthens campus-wide crisis prevention efforts as well as coordinates post-incident campus response. Dr. Crandal’s clinical and research interests include behavioral threat management, structured risk assessment procedures for higher education institutions and other large organizations, Motivational Interviewing, and strengths-based approaches to retention, coping, and engagement. She was the Motivational Interviewing clinical supervisor for the University of Missouri Greek Health Study, with the aim of improving student engagement in targeted healthy behaviors. With a focus on prevention, Dr. Crandal is actively involved in distressed student response training, crisis de-escalation, and threat assessment and management. She has served as a consulting psychologist to the California Community Colleges regarding training systems on their approach to recognizing and responding to psychologically distressed students. She earned her Bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Irvine and her Master of Education in Counseling Psychology and Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from the University of Missouri.

Attendance policy Those who attend this training in full and complete the appropriate evaluation form will receive CE credits. Those arriving more than 15 minutes after the start time or leaving before the training is completed will not receive CE credits.
