Contemporary Threat Assessment: 
College Response to a World at Risk

Presentation Description

Dr. Meloy, who has been conducting research and writing on violence risk and threat assessment for the past 25 years, will present the state of the art and science of contemporary threat assessment, drawing on the differences between traditional threat assessment and risk for targeted and intended violence.   In particular, he will highlight the role of mental health counseling staff in the dynamic process of threat assessment on campus.

About Dr. Reid Meloy
Dr. Meloy is a board-certified forensic psychologist (ABPP) and consults on criminal and civil cases throughout the U.S. and Europe, as well as the Behavioral Analysis Unit of the FBI, Quantico. He is Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at UC San Diego, School of Medicine and is on the faculty of the San Diego Psychoanalytic Center. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences and is past president of the American Academy of Forensic Psychology. 

His most recent book is the International Handbook of Threat Assessment (Oxford University Press, 2014). He is co-creator of the WAVR-21 (Specialized Training Services, 2007, 2010), an empirically-based assessment tool for targeted campus and workplace violence.

Dr. Meloy's work in the popular arena includes his Psychology Today blog, The Forensic Files, and serving as a technical consultant to the television program CSI since it first aired in 2001.

Learning Objectives

After this training, participants will be able to: 
  1. Describe three differences and three similarities between violence risk and threat assessment
  2. Discuss contemporary risk management strategies 
  3. Explain the role of the mental health professional on a threat assessment team at a community college

If you find you are unable to attend a workshop, a full refund may be requested up to one week before the event.  After that point, you may elect to apply the full amount to future workshops, or request a 50% refund from Dianne Avelar, MFT, at diavelar@cabrillo.edu.

Those who attend this training in full and complete the appropriate evaluation form will receive CE credits. Please note that credit will only be granted to those who attend the entire presentation. Those arriving more than 15 minutes after the start time or leaving before the training is completed will not receive CE credit.

BRN Approved: MHWA is approved by the California Board of Registered Nurses (BRN) to provide continuing education for registered nurses.
CPA Accredited: MHWA is approved by the California Psychological Association (CPA) to provide continuing professional education for psychologists. The California Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS) now recognizes CPA continuing education credit for license renewal for LCSWs, LEPs, LPCCs and MFTs. 


MHWA maintains responsibility for this program and its contents.
