Three hours of CEU credit will be available for MFTs and LCSWs through the Foothill Institute for Community College Mental Health, Provider # 4254.  The course meets the qualifications for 3 hours of continuing education credit for MFTs, LPCCs, LEPs and/or LCSWs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences.  Pre-payment is not required when you RSVP; if you cannot attend, simply notify Leslie Easton.

Approval for three hours of CE for psychologist is currently under review with the MCEP Accreditation Agency.  More information will be made available as soon as we receive it.

Course Description:
Responding to student mental health issues on community college campuses can, all too often, lead to a seeming conflict between students’ right to privacy and the campus community’s need for safety and enforcement of the college’s code of conduct.  Mental health service providers and college administrators must negotiate legal constraints and ethical guidelines regarding the needs of the individual and the campus. In addition, many campuses have instituted or are considering some form of “behavioral intervention team”, to provide a venue for a multidisciplinary response to distressed and  disruptive students.  These teams also must operate between the ‘right to privacy’ and the ‘need to know’.

This presentation will provide participants with a clear and practical understanding of the relevant laws governing the sharing of confidential   information, current best practices regarding privacy of mental health information for behavioral intervention teams, and discuss considerations for disciplinary actions involving mental health issues
.

Objectives:
Participants will gain:
    a. An understanding of the laws protecting the privacy of student information
    b. Tools to ensure legal compliance with privacy of information laws while providing for campus safety
    c. Guidelines for balancing the legal and ethical requirements for privacy and the campus community's need for safety and adherence  to conduct codes, when assisting students with mental health needs on campus

Come and learn about how, when and what are best practices for sharing Protected Health  Information on your campus.
